About Doris

Doris Barnes

Doris Barnes (Hartzog), affectionately known as “Dot,” was born on November 19, 1929, in Prentiss, Mississippi, to Ciceree and James Hartzog; both preceded her in death. She was the second eldest of seven children from that union: three sisters and three brothers. Following her mother’s death, Ciceree, seven more children were born from the union of James and Annie Lue Hartzog: four sisters and three brothers. Of her siblings, eight preceded her in death: James Hartzog, Jr., Samuel Ford Hartzog, Sr., Conner Hartzog, Juanita Branagh, Ciceree Hartzog, George (Paul) Hartzog, Ellis Jewel Hartzog, and Quilla Hartzog.

Doris had a passion for the work of the Lord, and she started her journey with Him at an early age as a member of Mount Zion in Prentiss, MS. She was a long-time member of Progressive Missionary Baptist Church (PMBC) in Chicago, Illinois, until she relocated to Atlanta, Georgia. There she served faithfully as a Sunday School teacher, Superintendent of the Sunday school, and member of the choir and Mothers Board. She was known as the woman with a gentle spirit who could bake a mean pound cake. Upon relocating to Georgia, she continued spreading her love and angelic smile as a part of the Mother Ministry at Zion Full Gospel World Ministries.

She spent her childhood in Prentiss, graduating from high school and then relocating to Chicago, Illinois. On December 10, 1949, Doris joined Glynn Earl Barnes (preceded in death) in holy matrimony, and they were blessed with seven children: Patricia, Carol, Gregory (preceded in death), Timothy Sr. (preceded in death), Vance, Glenn Jr., and Victor. Doris experienced some of her greatest joys as a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Down through the years, Doris strived to ensure the success and happiness of her family, loving and counseling her children to believe that with honesty, hard work, and prayer, you can achieve anything. Living in Chicago’s west side, southside, and Altgeld Gardens neighborhoods, Doris worked various jobs. In earlier years, she worked at the Curtiss Candy Company, making chocolate for candy bars like Baby Ruth and Butterfinger. She also worked as a healthcare worker, cafeteria cook, and school bus driver. Doris was a dedicated, dependable worker and probably had perfect attendance. Her second husband, Herbert Williams (preceded in death), told the story of her driving the school bus morning shift while in pain and returning to finish the afternoon shift after a short break. An emergency room trip resulted in gall bladder removal.

Doris embraced her blessing of excellent cooking skills and stirred up her gift with specialties like chicken & dumplings and dressing. Doris loved spending quality time with her family and watching her grandchildren play. In her leisure, she also enjoyed watching her favorite television shows – early years, her “stories” like “The Young and the Restless,” later years, country westerns. These westerns likely reminded her of growing up on the farm, feeding pigs, raising chickens, smoking meat, and milking cows.

Doris lived a full life and will be remembered for her smile, kindness, loving heart, devotion to her family, and love for God. She noted her favorite scripture as Psalms 23. She liked many gospel songs, with the words of “The Old Rugged Cross” proudly displayed over her bed.

On April 19, 2022, Doris mounted wings with angels and took to her heavenly home. She will forever be cherished in the lives of her loving children.
